4-Hers are back in the saddle

-A A +A

Throughout the year I have been working with a number of parent volunteers from 18 counties in the District (5) region to prepare youth enrolled in the 4-H horse program for the State 4-H Horse Show  held July 2-9 at the Kentucky Fair & Expo Center in Louisville.
Starting off in April, participants attended a two day educational horse camp in Casey County where more than 120 youth along with 145 parent/leaders and more than 100 horses were divided into groups based on their age, riding style and experience as they received helpful hints from certified instructors. In addition to the regular classes, camp participants love to enter the “Camp Idol” contest and dance the ever popular “Cotton Eye Joe.”
On Memorial Day weekend District 5 4-H families and their horses once again headed for Casey County to compete at the District five 4-H qualifying horse show.  With 125 youth representing more than 450 individual entries, everyone was hoping to win a blue or red ribbon in order to qualify for the state show in July. While the ribbons are important, the real reward comes from the personal satisfaction of training your own horse and knowing you did the best job possible.
The ultimate goal is to attend state or rather the State 4-H Horse Show held each year in July at the Kentucky Fair & Expo Center in Louisville. It is here that young people from across the state travel and compete hoping to place at the top of their class and take home the prized belt buckle.  Aside from their regular classes, several 4-Hers also compete in drill team competition where many, many hours are spent prior getting both horse and rider ready for the event.
A special thank you goes out to all parents and leaders who have worked very hard these past few months to prepare for these activities. As mentors you always will be remembered for the words of encouragement and helping hand you have given as part of their 4-H family. I encourage you to check out the top ten results at http://www.hardinext.org/district-horse-show.asp to see if there is someone you know from Hardin County.
