American Red Cross kicks off its summer season by serving the needs of the community this week.
The Elizabethtown American Red Cross hosts the Celebrate Summer Celebrate Life blood drive from noon to 7 p.m. Friday at Pritchard Community Center. The event is the largest blood drive of the year for the Red Cross site.
The event features free food and entertainment, including the Heartland Dulcimers, Harps for Life, Heartland Songwriters Association and the Allegro Dance Theatre Music Camp and Youth Salute.
Red Cross hopes to collect at least 60 units of blood, said Tammy Ritchie, a donor recruitment representative for the organization in Louisville. To reach the goal, they will need 75 to 80 donors.
Summer is a difficult time to collect blood, Ritchie said. Drives at high schools and colleges make up about 30 percent of collections, and those drives end during the summer. The event serves as a way to draw interest from potential donors. It also serves other purposes.
“It’s kind of a way for us to say thank you to our donors,” she said.
Regular donors often wait to donate at this drive, volunteer Jennifer Meyers said.
“A lot of people expect this event,” she said.
