Sweetie the gray poodle and Lucas the white cat cordially invite you to spend time with their friends this weekend.
Vine Grove Animal Refuge Centerhosts its annual Christmas party for the animals from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday. The party is an opportunity for the public to view the facility and spend time with the animals, around 165 in all, manager Penny Edwards said.
“It’s our biggest on-site event of the year,” she said. “We throw them their own Christmas party.”
Many party-goers bring gifts for the numerous cats, dogs and other animals that call the shelter home. Edwards said it also is an opportunity for adoptions or for residents to sponsor a pet.
Edwards said the open environment in which the animals live and the interaction they have with staff make the pets highly adoptable.
“They live in a home environment,” she said. “When they go to homes, they adjust very quickly because they have been around household noises.”
All adoptable animals have been vaccinated, tested for diseases and spayed or neutered, Edwards said. Adoption fees for cats are $60 and dogs are $70.
The party also is a chance for staff to find sponsors for each pet. A sponsor donates $10 monthly to the shelter, which is at full capacity, to help cover the cost of food and care for a chosen animal.
Edwards said many sponsors attend the party to bring their chosen pet treats and toys.
“We have an overall really good time,” she said. “Many animal stories are shared that day.”
She also said some of the human food available finds its way into the animals’ mouths, even though the pets are not supposed to have any.
She said the year-round sponsorship program is a way for someone who can’t adopt to contribute to the cage-free, long-term shelter.
“There is always a need,” she said. “The community always pulls us through.”
The center is at 185 Basham Trail in Vine Grove. For information, contact Edwards at 270-877-6064.
