VINE GROVE — Bouncer, Duchess, Reba and Polly will celebrate the holiday season Sunday afternoon.

And Miles sure would like a new home for Christmas.

The annual Animal Refuge Center Christmas party is Sunday at the center, an event director Penny Edwards says has been in place for at least 18 years.

She said the afternoon party for the animals at the center and visitors serves as a time to celebrate and gives the community a firsthand look at the facility.

“It’s a way to introduce people to the Animal Refuge Center,’’ she said. “It’s a great way for them to get acquainted with the center.’’

Edwards said typically there are pet adoptions a few days prior to and after the Christmas party. She said there are about 175 dogs, cats and goats at the center. The goats aren’t up for adoption.

She said the party is a time when the animals get even more attention than usual.

“So many of our cats are so friendly,’’ she said. “They’ll come up and lay next to people in chairs.’’

A cat like Miles, who is 17, has known no other home than the center all his life. Another cat, named Phil, has spent 16 years there.

Edwards said visitors also can sponsor a pet. There’s a sponsor program in place where $10 a month can be used for shelter, food and veterinary care.

Visitors will be welcomed with baked goods, cider, egg nog and holiday music, as well as the company of the center’s animals.

Bringing gifts for the animals is encouraged.

Edwards said the party is “how we’ve been able to get some adoptions and long-term supporters.’’
