Honoring promises

“A deal is a deal.” “A man’s word is his bond.” How many times have you heard these? While it is pleasantly refreshing to meet people who try to live up to those ideals, it is equally telling when you run across those who don’t.

The Democratic leaders of the Kentucky House last year got to show where they stand in keeping their word. It seems in early 2011, Catholic Conference officials met with the House leaders of both parties and secured their commitment to support a bill requiring informed consent for abortions. While the bill passed 35-6 in the Republican controlled state senate, the house bill never made it out of the committee for vote.

“It amounted to a broken promise” said Father Patrick Delahanty, Executive Director of the Catholic Conference. While some Democratic house members offered excuses or tried to blame the bitterness caused from the caucus process, their failure to keep their word in this matter should be no great surprise. Given that radical feminists are one of their key client groups, the Democratic Party and their leaders will protect abortion with the same fervor that they did with slavery prior to the American Civil War. I wonder what our two local House Democrats, Jimmie Lee and Fred Greer, were doing when this was going on. With the November election just around the corner, this might be a good time to ask “Where were you?”
