Bank scam calls target area residents

Police and bank officials are warning residents in the Hardin County area of a phone scam going on in the county, as well as in Meade and Breckinridge counties.

Radcliff Police on Tuesday received several calls about it. Residents have reported receiving phone calls from scammers saying they are from The Cecilian Bank or Fort Knox Federal Credit Union and the intended victims’ debit card has been deactivated. The scammers say account information and PINs are needed to re-activate the account.

Elizabethtown Police spokesman Virgil Willoughby received a cellphone call from an automated operator “499” that informed him his Cecilian Bank card was suspended. Willoughby said he doesn’t have an account there, so he called the bank and was notified of the scam.

Police said caller ID will show the number 499. Police and bank officials encourage residents not to give out any account information and to notify their nearest bank branch or police.
