Senior Kody Key-Close had a career shooting night and junior forward Caleb Sheffer just missed a double-double as the LaRue County Hawks opened 18th District play Friday night with a convincing 74-57 win over the visiting Hart County Raiders.
Key-Close scored 14 of his career-high 25 points by halftime for the Hawks (1-1, 1-0 district). He was 4-of-5 from the foul line and 9-of-15 from the floor.
Sheffer added 18 points – going 8-for-8 from the foul line – and a game-high nine rebounds. Outside of Sheffer and Key-Close, the Hawks were 4-of-14 from the foul line.
Senior Thomas Harman, playing just his second game at the point after shifting from shooting guard, chipped in with 11 points, three assists and two steals.
LaRue County trailed just three times for a combined 63 seconds, the last at 26-24 in the second quarter. After the Raiders (0-3, 0-2) took their final lead, the Hawks went into the half up 36-26 after a 12-0 run in the final 2:43 of the second quarter. Key-Close had five points and Sheffer had four points and one assist in the game-changing run as the Raiders were able to draw no closer than eight the rest of the night.
Senior guard Justin Riffle scored 13 of his team-high 19 points in the final 14 minutes for Hart County, which has allowed 65 points or more in every loss. Senior forward Stewart Nichols chipped in with a team-high six rebounds and 14 points.
It was the Hawks’ 17th straight win over the Raiders since a 68-66 loss in Munfordville on Dec. 9, 2005.
