Nichols has 24 points, 20 rebounds as Bruins rally from 12 down

Senior guard Matt Nichols recorded a 20-20 game as the Central Hardin Bruins were able to overcome a 12-point, second-quarter deficit to beat visiting 5th Region rival Nelson County, 67-57 on Tuesday.

Nichols notched game highs with 24 points and 20 rebounds, while junior forward Andrew Kinney added 12 points, four rebounds and four steals.

Sophomore forward Alex Crowder chipped in with 11 points, and junior guard Cannon Ray hit 3-of-6 3-pointers and finished with nine points and three assists.

The Bruins (1-0) trailed 19-9 at the end of the first quarter and 30-22 at halftime. Central Hardin outscored Nelson County (0-1), 23-12 in the third quarter and 22-15 in the fourth to pull away for the win.

ELIZABETHTOWN 62, ADAIR COUNTY 53. Senior post Mitchell Henry poured in 30 points on 10-of-18 shooting and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds as the visiting Panthers pulled away from 5th Region rival Adair County in both teams’ season opener.

Freshman guard Nic McDonald chipped in with nine points, three rebounds and two steals, while older brother Chris McDonald had eight points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

Junior forward Janzen Flood and senior guard/forward Cory Farrow each scored five points.

DAVIESS COUNTY 68, MEADE COUNTY 53. The visiting Panthers outscored the Green Wave, 46-21 in the second and third quarters to pull away for a big win in both teams’ season opener.

Trailing 21-15 at the end of the first quarter, Daviess County broke the game open with a 26-point second quarter and a 20-point third quarter.

Junior forward Cheaney Schwartz paced Meade County (0-1) with 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals, while junior forward Brady Smith added 10 points.

Junior guard Chase Garris hit 3-of-6 3-pointers and finished with nine points and three assists, and junior post Wes Dowell had seven points and six rebounds.
