By GREG CREWS gcrews@thenewsenterprise.com FORT KNOX — With his mixture of size, speed and soft touch, Elizabethtown’s Chris Ulis can pose matchup problems for nearly any team. The Fort Knox Eagles found that out first hand Friday on post. In a prelude to the first round of the 17th District Tournament, Ulis scored 11 of his game-high 22 points during a 4 minute stretch in the second quarter, turning a one-point deficit into a nine-point lead and the Panthers went on to beat the Eagles, 78-59. “Chris plays very aggressive on offense,” Elizabethtown coach James Haire said. “He’s always capable of games like that.” After trailing by seven in the first quarter, Fort Knox (3-15 overall, 0-8 district) came back with a 10-0 run to take the lead in the second as senior forward Zac Holman was fouled on a 3-pointer and hit all three free throws to put the Eagles up 18-17. Over the next 4 minutes, Ulis scored 11 points as Elizabethtown responded with 17-7 run to take control of the game and it never looked back. “We were doing what we should be doing (during the comeback)… passing the ball well, shooting well, getting in transition and getting easy layups,” Fort Knox coach Kip Rambo said. “We can’t get into the half-court with a team that has guts that are 6-(foot-7 or 6-9. “We played pretty well except the 3½ minutes of brain dead.” Elizabethtown led 37-29 by halftime and quickly stretched the margin to 15 points in the third quarter. “Unlike in the first half, we actually got back on defense,” Ulis said. “We started moving the ball better, too and getting better shots.” Junior guard Jamie Haire tallied 13 points and seven rebounds for the Panthers (7-12, 2-5), while senior guard Micheal Thomas and junior center Curtis Washington scored nine points apiece. Sophomore center Mitchell Henry finished with eight points and nine rebounds. Fort Knox’s Devin Jackson continued his torrid play, scoring more than 13 points for the seventh straight game as he recorded a team-high 18 to go along with seven rebounds. Senior guards Malcolm Reece and Ryan Lewis added 10 points each. “If you look over our last six or seven games, he’s been doing that pretty consistently,” Rambo said of Jackson, who has averaged 17.9 points over the last seven games. “He’s really coming on.” The Panthers locked up the No. 4 seed for the upcoming 17th District Tournament and will get a rematch with Fort Knox, the fifth seed, in the first-round quarterfinal. And despite two double-digit wins over the Eagles this season, the Panthers say they will not underestimate Fort Knox. “We’re definitely going to need to rebound better than we did tonight,” Jamie Haire said. “They’re pretty good. They’re a strong rebounding team. It’s not going to be an easy game.” UP NEXT: Elizabethtown hosts 5th Region rival Marion County at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Fort Knox plays at North Oldham at 8 p.m. Monday. Greg Crews can be reached at 505-1754
