By NATHANIEL BRYAN nbryan@thenewsenterprise.com ELIZABETHTOWN After overexerting himself early in his last race, Andrew Stewart knew better than to try to go all-out from the start Saturday. The North Hardin junior’s plan worked as he surpassed a pack of Owensboro Catholic runners on his way to the 62-harrier individual title at the annual Central Hardin Invitational at Freeman Lake Park. Stewart completed the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 27.23 seconds to claim an 11.2 second win over Owensboro Catholic’s Chase Kauffeld. “Through the first mile, I let their leader (Kauffeld) kind of pull me through,” said Stewart, who also starts on North Hardin’s boys’ soccer team. “My plan was to stick with their leader and then take the lead.” Kauffeld said once the elevation changed, Stewart made his move. “He hit me hard on the hills and that’s where he lost me. We tried to hold him off as long as we could,” Kauffeld said. Stewart said the hills played in his favor. “This is a really hilly course, but I like the environment here at Freeman Lake,” Stewart said. Stewart’s time was more than a minute slower than the season best he recorded two weeks ago in Louisville in the St. X Tiger run but said his performance Saturday wasn’t necessarily that much worse. “There, all of the big names were there and it’s easier to push yourself. I went out fast with them. And I got a PR (personal record), but it hurt,” Stewart said. “Today, I had to push myself more.” After catching his breath and taking a quick sip of water, Stewart returned to the finish line and shook the hand of nearly every finisher. “At first I did it because there was no need to leave my teammates as soon as I was done,” Stewart said. “But after a while I decided I should do it with everyone because they’re all out here working hard. No one is forcing anyone out here to run. Everyone needs that encouragement of someone telling them they did a good job even if you didn’t win.” Kauffeld was immediately followed by three of his teammates in Sam Thompson (third, 17:50.94), Michael Goedde (fourth, 17:55.86) and Clay Settles (fifth, 17:59.45). “We’re trying to take it easy at the beginning and charge hard at the end,” Kauffeld said. Even the Aces’ fifth scorer, Michael Polio, finished in the top 10 in 18:46.43 as Owensboro Catholic won the eight-squad team title with 24 points. Behind Stewart’s finish, North Hardin was the runner-up with 70 points, while Central Hardin was third with 74 points, Elizabethtown was fourth with 90, John Hardin was fifth with 97 and Fort Knox was eighth with 220. Kauffeld said his team has higher goals than just leaving Hardin County with the biggest trophy. “No we just need our No. 5 to come in faster so we can do better at State,” Kauffeld said. “I think winning is a possibility, but we have to keep training hard and keep up our dedication.” Between Owensboro Catholic’s top four and its next two were the area foursome of John Hardin’s James Kubisch (sixth, 18:03.75), Elizabethtown’s Tyler Larkin (seventh, 18:13.91) and the Central Hardin duo of Andrew Beams (eighth, 18:34.12) and Kyle Terry (ninth, 18:44.37). Ryan Durbin (25th, 19:47.05) was LaRue County’s top finisher, while Daniel Salvetti (42nd, 20:55.83) paced Fort Knox. In the other two boys’ races: JV (5K). Brandon Wiseheart (19:06.11) of Bullitt East won the 57-runner individual title as his Chargers took the six-squad team title. North Hardin’s Blaide Puckett (sixth, 20:54.63) was the area’s top individual. North Hardin (third) had the area’s best team finish. MIDDLE SCHOOL JV (3K). Josh Conder (12:10.68) of Louisville Johnson Traditional won the 86-runner individual title as he led his team to the three-squad team title. John Hardin’s Johnathon Swartz (second, 12:14.98) was the area‘s top individual, while John Hardin (second) had the area’s best team finish.
