BOYS' SWEET 16: John Hardin falls in quarterfinals

LEXINGTON - With the score tied at 50-50 with 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Montgomery County scored six unanswered points and never trailed the rest of way en route to a Sweet 16 State Tournament quarterfinal victory Friday night over John Hardin. The final score was 66-57.

The Bulldogs, winners of the 5th Region championship, jumped in front early and led by seven at the end of the first quarter. The game was tied at 26 by the half before Montgomery County surged ahead and recorded their 33rd win in 37 tries this season and reach Saturday night's semifinals.

Montgomery County's shooting touch was a key to victory. The team hit 50 percent of its attempts including half of its three-point tries. By contrast, John Hardin hit 22-of-56 two-pointers for 39.3 percent and also were 6-of-12 from beyond the three-point arch.

Montgomery County guard Bryan Wallace led all scorers with 21 points. Omar Prewitt and Darius Jones added 11 each.

John Hardin got 19 points from Patrick Anderson and 12 each by Brandon Price and Daveon Greene.

In other quarterfinal action Friday, Hopkinsville defeated Graves County 50-34 and Madison Central topped Covington Holmes 65-61. In Friday's final game, Ballard cruised past Knott County Central 68-53 to earn a date with Montgomery County in the semifinals.
