ELIZABETHTOWN — Good things come to those who wait. At least that’s what the LaRue County Hawks and Elizabethtown Panthers are hoping as rain delayed the finals of the 5th Region Tennis Tournament until today. LaRue County currently holds a 12-11 lead over Elizabethtown for the boys’ team title, but the Panthers can force a playoff if their doubles team of Samad Faheem and Hunter Hazle (No. 2 seed) can defeat LaRue County’s top-seeded doubles team of Terry Caven and Dylan Parr. The Panthers earned the team title last season by defeating Central Hardin in a playoff. It marked the second-ever team playoff and the first in 19 years. Elizabethtown is looking to win the title for the 13th consecutive year, while it would mark the first for LaRue County. The boys’ doubles final and the boys’ singles final between Central Hardin’s Jacob Blevins (No. 2) and Zach Thomas (No. 3), are scheduled to start at 5 p.m. today at the University Drive Park Tennis Courts. Should there be a four-match (two singles, two doubles) playoff for the team title, it would follow shortly after the conclusion of the finals. The girls’ finals were also delayed until 5 p.m. today. Elizabethtown has already locked up its sixth consecutive team title — its 17th since 1982 — and accounts for all four finalists. The Lady Panthers’ top-seeded Amanda Young will face second-seeded teammate Jenna Sallee for the girls’ singles championship for the second straight year, while the top-seeded doubles team of Jessica Maxwell and Lydia Youngblood will face sixth-seeded teammates Emily DuPlessis and Lexy Hazle for the girls’ doubles title.
