By BECCA OWSLEY firstname.lastname@example.org CECILIA — Although Cecilia boasts neither a city hall nor government positions, it does elect a mayor each year at Cecilia Days. It is an honorary position that is "elected" each year by people dropping money in a gallon jug next to the nominee’s name during Cecilia Days. At the end of the day the person with the most money wins. The Ruritan leaders got the idea from the Howevalley Ruritan Club and have had the election each year for about 10 years. Denver Woodring and the Ruritan president nominate candidates from the Ruritan membership and individuals in the community. “We just have fun with it,” Ruritan president Sue Hager said. Doug Clark, a Cecilia Days organizer, said it is the only office you can "truly buy" your way into. Harold Lewis was the recipient of the honorary position last year. The main job of the mayor each year is to light up the Caboose during Cecilia’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Nominees this year are: Dennis Parrot, Bill Hay, Sue Hager, Carl McKinley, Raymond Wooden, Tony Raizor, Keith Taul, Martha Thomas and David Taul. An extra jug will be available for write-in votes. The money received through the mayoral race raises funds for the Cecilia Ruritan Club. The winner will be announced at 8:20 p.m. Saturday. Becca Owsley can be reached at (270) 505-1741.
