There may not be any such thing as a free lunch, but for this weekend, there’s definitely such a thing as a free fair.
The 18th annual Children’s Fair will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at Freeman Lake Park. The fair is free for families and offers games, prizes and entertainment for children ages 1 to 12.
The fair is sponsored by the Heart of Kentucky Realtors, and radio stations WQXE-FM and WULF-FM. Jennifer Meyers, an account executive with the stations, said the event was first formed because officials with the organizations wanted to bring a free family event to the area.
“They felt a need,” she said.
The fair will be held at the Ernie Williams Pavilion this year, which is new, Meyers said. Another new addition to the fair is a performance by the Heartland Hot Steppers, a local children’s jump rope group.
Popular activities such as the Mascot Idol will return, with new mascots like the Kia Hamster.
Meyers said parents share their gratitude every year for the event, as it gives them a fun family activity without a price tag attached. The recent economic difficulties means fewer vacations and other outings for many people, and they’re happy to have the fair, she said.
“It seems like it’s become even more important,” she said.
