Even their names are entrancing — Thalia, Salome, Angelique, Antoinette, King Alfred — names that evoke the romance of some mythic past. And while these images and stories may seem unrelated to the papery bulbs we put in the ground, they reflect a mystique that these plants have for us. Their emergence in spring so soon after the gray days of winter is truly magical. Bulbs have been popular for centuries and some of the oldest varieties are still popular today, along with new ones being developed each year.
