The 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat team, 1st Infantry Division is headed back to the front lines.

Fort Knox is hosting a colors casing ceremony for the unit 10 a.m. Tuesday at Brooks Field on post as its members ramp up for another tour of Afghanistan.

Not all of the unit’s roughly 3,500 soldiers will deploy. Sgt. Thomas Duval with the 3/1 Public Affairs Office said the numbers continue to fluctuate but about 2,000 soldiers are expected to leave.

Duval said exact dates for deployment have not been released but the unit will depart within 30 days of next week's ceremony.

The final group returned from a one-year deployment to Afghanistan in January 2012. They assisted in securing and stabilizing the Khowst and Paktya provinces in Afghanistan. Soldiers also provided education and mentorship to Afghan National Security Forces and assisted the Afghan government so it could start rebuilding the country and provide services, such as education and health care.

Nine members of the unit were killed in combat during the last deployment.
