In the spirit of remembrance, Hardin County will salute its veterans Saturday at Optimist Park in Vine Grove.
The 15th annual Hardin County Veterans’ Day Celebration launches from the Vine Grove Fire Department at 10 a.m. with a parade. Local veteran Ralph Reese serves as grand marshal, said Vine Grove Events Coordinator Donna Broadway.
The parade ends at Optimist Park, where a formal ceremony is at 11 a.m., Broadway said.
State Rep. Tim Moore, an Elizabethtown Republican and U.S. Air Force veteran, has been pegged as the featured speaker. Mike Weaver, a retired U.S Army veteran and former state representative, will provide an update on the restoration of the last remaining World War II barracks on Fort Knox, which resides in front of the General George Patton Museum of Leadership and is scheduled for a formal dedication Dec. 6.
The North Hardin JROTC Honor Guard is scheduled to perform the Missing Man ceremony, a tribute to deceased veterans who were prisoners of war or missing in action. The ceremony will be accompanied by an airplane fly-over this year, Broadway said.
The Louisville-based Ladies of Liberty also will provide patriotic music with a decidedly retro vibe, Broadway said.
Organizers lined up the 113th Army Band from Fort Knox to offer musical entertainment, though Broadway was certain the government shutdown would cause the band to pull out of the event. Resolution of the national conflict averted a cancelation.
“We’re delighted we got them back,” she said.
This year’s theme is “The American Veteran and Our Military” and a complimentary light lunch is served at the conclusion.
