Grinch in White Mills?
Yes, White Mills, there is a Grinch!
For many years during my daughters’ childhoods, Christmas included the story of the imaginary Grinch who wanted to steal Christmas and keep others from having a great time. Little did I know that Dr. Suess’ creative character would appear in the flesh this week in White Mills. Scores of people decorated the community, especially the bridge, in order to provide an opportunity for people to enjoy some sights of Christmas. Those lights were proudly illuminated Nov. 28 to the hundreds of joyous eyes gathered around.
Yet, the lights on the bridge have been blackened by the sad cruelty that only Dr. Suess’ Grinch could have imagined. With hundreds of dollars of damage done, the rest of the Christmas season will be a little less bright. But don’t think for a moment that you, the Grinch that you are, have robbed our community of Christmas. For we know that the bridge was not the source of our joy or our celebration, but only a reflection of the One that Christmas is about in the first place.
Yet, like Dr. Suess’ Grinch character, you will have a sad Christmas as your vandalism reflected the sadness and emptiness of your heart and mind. Dr. Suess’ Grinch was “man” enough to see his mistakes and change. It depresses me as I wonder if you will ever be “man” enough to be anything except for the Grinch you are. I hope that in some way that the Babe of Christmas will speak to your heart of the need of repentance and that maybe your heart will grow this Christmas.
