Democratic Woman’s Club gather for November meeting

-A A +A

The Hardin County Democratic Woman’s Club held its monthly meeting Nov. 5. President Debbie Donnelly welcomed members, elected officials and guests and new members Rick and Erlene Rogers, Carol Chitwood and Nicole Nemo.  President Donnelly gave a devotion on Veteran’s Day.

After dinner, First Vice President Lisa Parrett introduced guest speakers, Veteran’s Tribute board member Rik Hawkins and Veteran’s Tribute sculptor Rich Griendling. Hawkins gave background information about the tribute. He said he was approached by Gary Broadway about doing a tribute for veterans in Hardin County after he and his wife had seen something in Eastern Kentucky.  Hawkins thought of Griendling to do the sculptures and locating it around Freeman Lake. Elizabethtown city officials suggested the nature park on Ring Road.  Four years later, the tribute is a complete.  Griendling presented a slideshow of the tribute. He did research before he started the sculptures and had to find models. After molds were done, they were sent to be bronzed.  The granite engravings and the sculptures were put in place in one day.  Each sculpture weighs 350 pounds. All five branches of the military are represented, along with a civil service worker and MIA representation. Bricks and pavers dedicated to veterans surround the tribute.

The ways and means committee drew for door prizes, donated by Susie Westover, Julie Smith, Diane Nall, Debbie Donnelly, Martha Thomas and Danny Hutcherson. Winners were Ellen Sexton, Diane Nall, Martha Thomas, Rick Rogers, Sherry Kelley, Danny Hutcherson, Jo Nell Lee and Becky Bishop.

Chairperson of the nominating committee Jane Cave gave a report for the 2013 officers, President Julie Smith; First Vice President Dorothy Leonard; Second Vice President Lisa Parrett; Secretary Susie Westover; Treasurer Becky Bishop; and Auditor Diane Nall. Ways and Means committee member Julie Smith thanked everyone for bringing snack crackers for the Mission of Hope for Kids program.  She also announced four or five club members would serve dinner Nov. 15 to the VRSCC.  In December, club members will donate to the backpack program. Betty Jackson reported she had sent get-well cards to Jane Cave and Mary Dick. President Donnelly reminded everyone to vote and poll workers were recognized.

The next meeting is Dec. 3. For information, contact Debbie Donnelly, 765-5613 or debbied@bbtel.com.
