A New Haven man was shot in the chest Thursday by a Nelson County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

Trooper Norman Chaffins, spokesman for Kentucky State Police Post 4 in Elizabethtown, said the deputy was at 2125 Monks Road in New Haven on a property dispute.

The deputy “was met on the porch by 61-year-old John Hagan, who pointed a gun at him. The deputy fired one time, striking Hagan in the right upper torso. The deputy then secured the weapon and administered CPR until EMS arrived,” Chaffins said.

Hagan is listed in critical condition at University Hospital in Louisville, Chaffins said.

The identity of the deputy was not immediately released.

KSP is handling the investigation at the request of the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office.
