At a recent meeting of the Elizabethtown Lions Club, Lion President Ron White, center, introduced to the club guest speaker Dr. Ali Haider, left. Dr. Haider is a member of the Downtown Louisville Lions Club, U of L clinical instructor in ophthalmology, director of cornea, external and refractive surgery, director of the Kentucky Lions Eye Bank and co-director of International Ophthalmology. Dr. Haider offered a slide presentation from recent travels to Pakistan and Ghana, where he has performed hundreds of surgical procedures for the poor and underserved. There are 180 million people throughout the world who are visually impaired, 90 percent of whom reside in third world nations and 88 percent of their visual problems could be avoided or cured and would not exist in a country like the U.S. the Downtown Louisville Lions Club has been working toward establishing a self-sustaining eye center in Pakistan and are nearing their goal. Dr. Haider’s Pakistan/Ghana trips are made possible with help from the Downtown Club. Also pictured is Dr. Haider’s brother, Dr. Kashif Haider.
