Education? There’s an app for that

KDE launches interactive tool

Parents and students who use Infinite Campus to check grades and assignments now can check them on the go using Apple products.

Infinite Campus has designed a campus mobile portal app for Apple in conjunction with the Kentucky Department of Education, which allows parents and students to connect to Infinite Campus on an iPad, iPhone or an iPod Touch.

The portal app has features that include a daily planner, which lets students know of events and upcoming assignments; assignments, which gives information about class work; attendance, where parents can find recorded absences and tardies; grades, which includes what assignments make up a grade; and notifications, which allows parents and students to find changes made to any of the information.

Lisa Gross, director of communications and community engagement for the Kentucky Department of Education, said KDE and Infinite Campus were interested in apps and mobile connectivity.

There are plans to bring the app to the Android operating system next, Gross said.

Mike Selvitelle, director of technology and assessment at Elizabethtown Independent Schools, said Infinite Campus is pretty popular among the parents in the district, and estimates at least half of them use the website.

He thinks the app version could catch on as well, he said.

Hardin County Schools recently revised its policy to allow students to use cellphones for educational purposes if the school’s site-based decision making council allows it, said Bobby Lewis, associate superintendent for student services.

That leaves room for students wanting to use the Daily Planner feature.

Selvitelle said school policy doesn’t allow students to have phones in class, but he sees changes coming with more and more opportunities available through phones.

Lewis said the iPad app could be convenient for administrators to bring up student information quickly, especially outside of the building. HCS administrators have district-issued iPads.
