Elizabethtown Independent Schools will begin recognizing its successful graduates along with outstanding athletes.
The EIS board voted Monday to create a Distinguished Alumni award program. The decision follows on the heels of the board’s approval of an athletic hall of fame for the district.
Superintendent Gary French, a graduate of Elizabethtown High School, said the program was something he wanted to see for a while and he hopes to get it started this school year.
“I’m very excited about this,” French said at the meeting.
The district is forming a committee of 10 to 12 members to create criteria for the award as well as a timeline for it to begin.
Board members Guy Wallace and Teresa Harris will serve on the committee. French said he expects the rest of the committee to be in place after a meeting this week.
The board approved the program unanimously without discussion.
The district approved creation of the athletic hall of fame in July.
A committee for that program has been formed and currently is meeting. Community member Duke Burnett spearheaded that effort and presented the idea to the board.
