Elizabethtown Chief Fire Inspector Rusty Todd issued a reminder to residents Friday that leaf burning is prohibited within city limits.
The city does allow for burning of natural materials, such as garden debris, trees, limbs and small branches associated with land clearing. But a permit must be obtained to ensure the material is acceptable and the responsible party will take necessary steps to prevent an uncontrolled fire, according to the statement released by Todd. No permits are issued by the Elizabethtown Fire Department for leaf burning.
“The smoky haze seen recently over Elizabethtown is likely due to fall cleanup activities in our area outside the city limits as only a few recent permits have been issued for land clearing debris burn piles,” Todd said in the statement. “Under the normal weather conditions this time of year, smoke will often travel long distances and is hard to dissipate due to low wind conditions.”
Any questions concerning materials appropriate to burn within city limits should be directed to the administrative office of the Elizabethtown Fire Department at (270) 765-2121 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
