James Lee Wilkerson, 27, was indicted Thursday on charges of first-degree rape, theft by unlawful taking — automobile and first-degree persistent felony offense.

An indictment is an allegation, not proof of guilt. Defendants are innocent until proven guilty. Wilkerson has denied the allegations.

U.S. Marshals arrested Wilkerson on Oct. 18 in Bardstown after Vine Grove Police Department requested the service’s assistance in finding him.

According to police, Wilkerson is accused of forcibly raping a woman Sept. 25 in Vine Grove. Following the incident, he stole a 2002 Jeep Cherokee that was recovered the following day, officials said.

At the time of the alleged offense, Wilkerson was on probation for manufacturing methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Wilkerson is lodged at Hardin County Detention Center in lieu of $150,000 cash. He is scheduled to appear for arraignment Tuesday in Hardin Circuit Court.
