The Ohio Valley Regional Baseball Tournament for 12-year-olds will have some company this summer at the Elizabethtown Sports Park: twelve 11-year-old All-Star teams from seven states.

The expected $28 million facility off St. John Road has landed both age groups for the July 26-31 regionals. That event is expected to draw 24 teams from seven states.

As the host for both tournaments, All-Star teams from the Elizabethtown Area Baseball Commission will have automatic spots in both regionals.

“It makes the excitement of the event double,’’ said Janna Clark, Elizabethtown Tourism and Convention Bureau sports and sales director. “It will make for an even more exciting week.’’

ETCB officials announced early last month the regional for 12-year-olds was in place.

“We found out at the October state meeting that there was a possibility of two regionals needing hosts,’’ said Mike Pyles, EABC Tournament Director in an email. “One was from a park in Michigan needing to back out because of construction and another was the 11-year-old ‘50/70’ regional.“We approached the Ohio Valley Regional directors and expressed our interest soon after the state meeting that we could host another Regional and would like the opportunity.’’

Pyles said local officials were approached last month about hosting the second regional and they accepted.

“We are projecting the second regional to bring in almost $250,000 in revenue to the community during this weekend,’’ Pyles said. “EABC appreciates the Tourism Board to believe and support our efforts in bringing now two national regionals to Elizabethtown in July and we are confident that we will shine in our endeavors of hosting a high-quality event.’’

Teams will advance to Elizabethtown from Ohio, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky in both age divisions.

The winner of the 12-year-olds qualifies for the Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen, Md., in August. There is no World Series for the 11-year-olds.
