Family loses more than money to a ‘Most Wanted’

Hunt says Jenny Lee Mauller took more than $10,000 for bail, expenses

By Sarah Bennett

After providing financial assistance and support to a coworker in need, an Elizabethtown woman fell prey to one of Hardin County’s Most Wanted.

Laura Hunt, who used to work with Jenny Lee Mauller at Wal-Mart, paid two of Mauller’s bonds. According to Hunt, she and her husband lost more than $10,000, including bond payments, attorney fees and other costs.

“It makes us not trust people,” Laura Hunt said Friday. “We took her into our home. We even gave her $2,000 to be able to do Christmas for her kids.”

Mauller, 42, is wanted for two counts of first-degree bail jumping, first-degree wanton endangerment, driving under the influence, violating an emergency protection order and violating probation.

The Hunts even took Mauller into their home for a short while, buying her clothes, making cellphone payments and allowing her to drive their vehicles, she said.

“We thought of her like a daughter,” she added later.

Hunt has gathered paperwork to potentially file a theft by deception charge against Mauller, she said.

When she last saw Mauller, the woman told her she needed to take her grandson to a Louisville hospital, Hunt said. She ultimately allowed Mauller to borrow her vehicle and credit card to purchase gas and food, she said.

Though Hunt was able to retrieve the car, she never saw her credit card again, she said. Mauller charged $2,000 on it.

“She knew what she was doing and took us for all this money,” Hunt said.

Hardin County law enforcement continues to hunt Mauller, a former Elizabethtown resident, who has been on the lam for more than two years and has active warrants in four felony court cases.

Mauller was on pre-trial diversion after pleading guilty to welfare fraud when she was arrested in Elizabethtown for a DUI, according to court records. Officials said one of her children was in the car during the alleged incident.

Records indicate Mauller was released on bond, and in June 2011, she stopped appearing at court hearings after pleading guilty to the probation violations, according to records.

AssistantCommonwealth’s Attorney Eric Carr said the last information he received was that Mauller could be in Ohio. According to Hunt, Mauller originally is from Ohio.

According to the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office, she also used to live in Greensburg.

The sheriff’s office describes Mauller as 5-foot-1 and 119 pounds. She has red hair and brown eyes.
