Howevalley Mona Holbert, 234-3298 WINTER STORM. Kentucky still is recovering from the recent ice storm. As I write this column on Feb. 3, many still are without electricity. It’s been a very trying time for all of us. Schools have been closed for more than a week, businesses were closed and so forth. We also had to conserve our water resources. We got our electric back on Jan. 30 and the Howevalley community got some of theirs back on Feb. 3. We all have a lot of cleaning up to do in our yards and along the roadways. Many trees were totally destroyed. Also, I have heard comments from my readers and they said I got my wish. I did not wish for any ice storm to come our way. I wanted snow and I still like snow. BENEFIT. A benefit will be held on Feb. 28 at Howevalley Elementary School for Amy Horn Meredith, her husband, Matthew, and daughter, Cassie. They have many medical expenses that insurance does not cover since Amy was diagnosed with brain cancer in Dec. 2008. A soup/chili supper will begin at 4 p.m. with an auction following at 5:15 p.m. Gospel singing will be held throughout the evening. To donate auction items, please call Alice Slaubaugh at 862 4545; to donate food and drinks, call Norma Horn at 862-4123. Other POC: Dusty Sullivan at 763-2378 or Mike Nall at 862-3041. Amy’s church, Yates Chapel, is sponsoring the event. Modern Woodmen of America will match funds raised up to $2,500. Your support, attendance and prayers will be greatly appreciated. The public is invited. GET-WELL WISHES. Get-well wishes to Amy Horn Meredith, Cathy Morgan, Dona Whalen and Faye Valentine. SYMPATHY. Sympathy is extended to the family of Harvey Thompson. He was owner of the Hardin Agri Services in Cecilia for many years. HAPPY BIRTHDAY. ANNIVERSARIES. Happy anniversary wishes to Jeff and Lynn Butler on Feb. 14 (27 years); Mike and Karen Williams on Feb. 15 (21 years); and Joe and Lana Sampson on Feb. 15 (45 years). BACK IN THE DAY. Valentine’s Day. When I was in second grade at Howevalley Elementary School, my teacher was Jane Morgan. She asked me to help a boy named Ricky fill out his cards to his classmates. We each would decorate a paper bag to hang on the bulletin board for each student to put valentines in. I wonder how the students celebrate the special day nowadays. LAUGH LINE. Teacher: You missed school yesterday. Student: Not really. NEWS ITEMS. Call in your news items and leave on voice mail at 234-3298 or e-mail to mholbert31@yahoo.com by Sunday evening.
