Fire watch: Weather Service issues warning for Saturday

-A A +A

A fire weather watch issued by the National Weather Service covers Hardin, Meade, LaRue and several adjacent counties in Kentucky.

It will be in effect from Saturday afternoon through Saturday evening because of gusty winds and a forecast of low relative humidity, which could trigger fire outbreaks.

The Kentucky area covered generally is north of the Blue Grass and Western Kentucky parkways and stretches into southern Indiana. Grayson, Bullitt, Breckinridge and Nelson also are covered by the alert.

The forecast calls for south winds increasing to 15 to 25 miles per hour with gusts approaching 30 mph. The relative humidity could fall to 25 percent by late afternoon and temperatures are expected to be in the 70s.

The weather advisory says these conditions can combine with dry fuels such as brush and leaves to enhance wildfire dangers. Any outdoor fire is at risk of quickly spreading out of control because of the winds.

Residents are encouraged to refrain from setting fire between midday until after sunset Saturday because of the conditions.
