New building on North Miles to be ready by June

First Christian Church of Elizabethtown is targeting June 2 as the opening Sunday in its new facility at 1807 N. Miles St.

According to Stuart Jones, senior minister, construction is on schedule and the congregation is preparing for the move.

“The goal when we started pouring footers last May was to complete the building in a year,” Jones said. “We have been blessed with good weather and great workers. We’re right on schedule.”

The move will complete a three-year relocation process. In spring 2010, First Christian sold its property on North Mulberry Street to Elizabethtown Independent Schools. Panther Academy now occupies that site. In November 2010, the congregation moved to an interim location at 401 W. Poplar St. A 17-acre site on North Miles was purchased and site work began in November 2011.

Features of the new 49,000-square-foot building include a worship center with 935 theater-style seats, a dedicated nursery/preschool wing with separate entrance for weekday use, an elementary wing with six classrooms and an auditorium that accommodates 150 elementary children, an indoor playground, a middle school and senior high school worship center, adult classrooms and a large commons area.

“We designed the building with the idea that it can be a place where people in our community will be comfortable for events and activities during the week, in addition to our Sunday services,” Jones said.

Remaining interior work includes flooring, plumbing fixtures, audio, video, theatrical lighting, seat installation and trim work. Site work to be completed by opening day includes paving parking lots, landscaping and finishing the street that provides access to Ring Road.
