A family acquaintance is charged with the rape and sexual abuse of a then 12-year-old Elizabethtown girl that is alleged to have happened between December 2012 and February 2013.

Jasen Sawyer, 25, of Ruskin, Fla., was arrested by Elizabethtown police while he was in town Thursday visiting the family.

“When we realized he was coming here, it was better for us to get him here then to have to get a warrant for him down there,” said Sgt. Tim Cleary of EPD.

Cleary said “electronic communication” between Sawyer and the girl, and initiated by Sawyer, had continued after the alleged assaults.

“The family just recently learned of what went on,” Cleary said. He said the family reported the allegations to police on Jan. 28.

According to an arrest citation, Sawyer performed inappropriate acts on the child at her home while he stayed with the family. There were at least two alleged assaults.

After Sawyer was read his rights Thursday, police say “he stated that he had performed these acts.”

Sawyer is being held at the Hardin County Detention Center lin lieu of $75,000 cash bond. He is scheduled to appear at 9 a.m. March 14 in Hardin District Court.

First-degree rape of a person 12 years of age or younger is a Class felony punishable of up to life in prison.
