ELIZABETHTOWN — Gary French’s connection to Elizabethtown Independent Schools began as a student, and he hopes to continue that connection as superintendent.

French, the director for student services in the district, interviewed for the EIS superintendent position Wednesday. French is the third candidate to interview, after Nathan Huggins, EIS director of district support services, and Dr. Rebecca Lowry, assistant superintendent of Dayton Public Schools in Dayton, Ohio.

French said he knew early on he wanted to enter the education field, for the same reason all teachers should enter the field — their love of children.

“That’s why we get in this profession,” he said.

French said he thinks most teachers, like him, do not begin their careers expecting to become a superintendent, but some find they have a leadership quality.

“I think that becomes a realization for some people,” he said.

French feels ready for the superintendency after his varied positions and responsibilities in the district.

He worked 10 years as a teacher, beginning in 1978, in EIS and in Hardin County Schools. He has served as an associate principal, assistant superintendent, interim superintendent, and as director of transportation, all for EIS. He took his current position in 2007. He applied for the EIS superintendent position during the last search.

French has a bachelor’s and master’s degrees and a Rank 1 from Western Kentucky University, and is working toward his superintendent certification at Western. He had begun his certification work in 2005 at Eastern Kentucky University.

Along with his career being almost exclusively at EIS, he also graduated from Elizabethtown High School. He said his student and professional experiences there make him feel very connected to it.

“I connect with my heart; I have a passion for this school district,” he said.

The other known candidate left to be interviewed is Leesa Moman, director of special programs at Daviess County Schools. A fifth candidate has chosen not to release his or her name.
