Fun, kid friendly treats

Spring break is almost here. For this adventure we’ll take a look at some easy, fun treats to make while the kids are home from school.

The first are Nutter Butter ice cream cone treats. These are easy because they only involve dipping and decorating. You can use normal size Nutter Butter cookies to look more like an ice cream cone or the smaller circle size — “smaller, round” cookie that looks more like a waffle bowl of ice cream.

Dip the top of the cookie in white chocolate and then decorate with sprinkles. Top it off with an M&M or other small circular candy to look like a cherry on top.

After they cool, they look adorable and taste great.

Another easy treat is to make is a sucker out of Jolly Rancher candies.

Line a pan with parchment paper and place about three Jolly Rancher candies next to one another so they look stacked lying on the paper. Bake in an oven at 200 degrees for five minutes. The suckers still will be a little gooey. Place the sucker stick in the melted candies and let cool. After they cool, peel off the paper and you have a sucker.

After making these, I wondered if you could use a cookie cutter to make the suckers into shapes before they cool. It might be something to try if you have the time and plenty of candy for trial and error.

I goofed when I tried the third recipe, sugar cookie covered Oreos. All I had to go by was a photo and after the cookies began to bake, I realized I should have done something differently.

I used refrigerated cookie dough but you probably could use your own sugar cookie recipe. Wrap the dough around the Oreo cookie and then cover with sprinkles. For good coverge, put some sprinkles in a bowl and press the cookie into the sprinkles.

The next step is where I goofed. I put the cookies on a regular cookie sheet and noticed when they began to bake they spread like a normal cookie. I realized to have the sugar cookie keep its shape around the Oreo I should have baked the cookies in a muffin tin to keep the cookie from spreading flat.

The result of all three recipes was a colorful array of treats that were simple enough to do with kids if they are bored at home on spring break.

1 package of Nutter Butter cookies
1 package of white chocolate chips, white almond bark or white candy melts
M&M's or other colored candies
Sprinkles
Wax Paper 

Melt white almond bark, white candy melts or white chocolate chips in the microwave.

Dip half the cookie in the melted chocolate. Lay onto wax paper.

Sprinkle with sprinkles. Top with an M&M.

Let them harden, or stick them in the frig for a few minutes, and your done.

Jolly Rancher Suckers
A bag of Jolly Rancher hard candies
Sucker sticks
Parchment paper

Preheat oven to 200 degrees.

Lay three unwraped jolly rangers side-by-side, with the long sides touching, on a cookie sheet covered in parchment paper. Repeat for as many suckers as needed, leaving room for a stick.

Bake for five minutes.

The candy will have melted flat but will be sticky. Place sucker sticks in melted candy while still gooey. Let harden for a few minutes in the refrigerator.

When hardened, pull from parchment paper and enjoy.

Sugar Cookie Covered Oreos
Refrigerated sugar cookie dough
Sprinkles
Oreo cookies 

Wrap sugar cookie dough around each Oreo cookie. Cover in sprinkles. Place the covered cookie into a muffin tin. Bake per instructions on sugar cookie packaging.
