The 82nd annual meeting of the Garden Club of Kentucky was held March 27-29 at the Crowne Plaza/Campbell House in Lexington. Members from the Garden Club of Elizabethtown in attendance were Joyce Effinger, Andrea McWright, Martha Mengel and Ron and Ann Kowalkoski.

Dianne Caines, out-going president of the Garden Club of Kentucky, presided. Approximately 150 gardeners across the state were in attendance.

Silent auction items, statewide vendors and three door prizes of “A Day at Keeneland” were provided by Kentucky Bank. Thousands of dollars in scholarships were awarded. Floral designs from Master Flower Show members created exceptional beauty all around.

Shirley Nicolai, National Garden Club president of Maryland, spoke and shared stories of her travels across America and the many diverse clubs she was privileged to meet.

Jon Carloftis, nationally recognized landscape architect, was the highlight of the convention, sharing knowledge of landscape design and photographs of his work and giving a virtual tour of his historical home in Lexington. The gardens of his home are patterned after the French Gardens of Versailles.

Joanna Kirby of Lancaster was installed at the president-elect of the Garden Club of Kentucky. She will be visiting Elizabethtown in October at the Dogwood District meeting. Her theme is “Kentucky, Let’s Grow Helping Hands Across Kentucky.”

Ann Kowalkoski, of the Garden Club of Elizabethtown, was installed as the Dogwood District director and 17 clubs make up that district.
