By GREG CREWS gcrews@thenewsenterprise.com FORT KNOX — After a nearly two-week hiatus, the Elizabethtown Lady Panthers were ready to get back on the floor. Their opponents were not. One night after dismantling highly touted Marion County in a 26-point win, the Lady Panthers struck again, topping 17th District rival Fort Knox, 101-17 on Friday on post. “I guess against Marion County all of us were all kind of iffy because we hadn’t played since two Friday’s before that and it probably was just the excitement to come back and play again after all the time off,” said Elizabethtown senior guard Dorian Downs, who hit 3-of-6 shots from behind the 3-point arc and finished with a game-high 19 points against Fort Knox (1-15 overall, 0-7, district). “We’re playing a lot better overall. Every game we are getting better and if we can keep playing the way we played tonight, we’ll do pretty well.” Senior center Alex Jones racked up 17 points, nine rebounds, six rebounds and five steals for Elizabethtown (18-2, 6-1), while sophomore forward Denisha Nichols had 11 points and five rebounds and sophomore point guard Natalie Greenwell added 10 points and six assists. All 12 varsity players recorded a basket for the Lady Panthers, with 10 scoring six or more points. “I think we’ve been playing pretty well and we continued to play well tonight,” Elizabethtown coach Tim Mudd said. “I thought they passed the ball well, shot the ball well, it was just overall a good game.” Senior forward Biancia Zinger, who recorded Fort Knox’s first field goal a little more than 2 minutes into the second quarter, finished with six points and seven rebounds to lead the Lady Eagles. By the end of the first quarter, Elizabethtown had already gotten all the scoring it would need, leading 23-1. In the second quarter, Downs hit three 3-pointers on four trips down court and the Lady Panthers had built a 33-2 lead by the time Zinger hit the Lady Eagles’ first field goal. “It’s big for us,” Mudd said of Downs’ improved shooting. “It opens things up more in the paint and gives us a more good looks like we had tonight.” Elizabethtown led 53-4 at the halftime and stretched it to 80-11 by the end of the third quarter. With 37 seconds remaining, sophomore guard Hannah Hart found Nichols open on the left block, where Nichols banked in a shot to put Elizabethtown over the 100-point mark for the first time in 41 games. Despite the win, Elizabethtown locked up the No. 2 seed for the 17th District Tournament on Friday as North Hardin beat Central Hardin to earn the top seed. Elizabethtown will play No. 3-seed Central Hardin in the semifinals, while No. 5-seed Fort Knox will play No. 4-seed John Hardin in the quarterfinals.
