Thirty-three indicted for drug-related offenses

By Sarah Bennett

A Hardin County grand jury returned 56 indictments in November with more than half of those involving drug offenses.

Thirty-three drug-related indictments were returned with 21 involving methamphetamine.

Additionally, eight defendants were indicted for trafficking in marijuana.

Among those indicted for methamphetamine-related charges were Michael Scott Baker, 36, and Katherine Michelle Baker, 36.

The couple were arrested Aug. 30 after police found two methamphetamine labs in their Elizabethtown apartment where the Bakers lived with their 10- and 7-year-old children, according to police.

Investigators initially responded to the Kroger at Dolphin Drive when a loss-prevention employee notified the Greater Hardin County Narcotics Task Force of suspicious activity involving the Bakers, police said.

Katherine and Michael Baker each were indicted on charges of complicity to commit manufacturing in methamphetamine, complicity to commit first-degree possession of a controlled substance, two counts of complicity to commit fourth-degree controlled substance endangerment to a minor and complicity to commit possession of drug paraphernalia.

Michael Baker also was indicted for unrelated theft allegations.

Between Feb. 21 and June 6, 2012, Baker is accused of writing 10 forged or altered checks, according to an indictment. Three checks were made payable to the Division of Child Support.

In total, the forged checks amount to more than $1,900, according to the indictment.

The grand jury indicted Baker on three counts of theft of mail matter, 10 counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and first-degree persistent felony offense.

According to the indictment, all theft-related charges involve the same alleged victim.

The Bakers are scheduled to appear for arraignment Jan. 8 in Hardin Circuit Court.

An indictment is an allegation, not proof of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
