AmeriCorps VISTA of Central Kentucky conducting event

AmeriCorps VISTA of Central Kentucky is conducting a pet adoption Sunday in Elizabethtown as a service act in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

VISTA leader Medley Byers said the organization chose to assist pets and pet owners through its service project because it was an initiative about which the members are “very passionate.”

The Pets in Need Society is providing 10 animals, Byers said, which will include adult dogs, puppies and cats.

The pet adoption starts at noon Sunday between Lowe’s and Feeders Supply Co. in Elizabethtown and runs until 3 p.m., according to a news release.

Throughout the week, VISTA has been collecting donations for a pet food and supply drive at locations throughout Elizabethtown and Radcliff as part of the service project, Byers said.

The organization will continue to collect those items Sunday at the pet adoption site, she said.

Items collected will be donated to Mystery Thrift Shop in Elizabethtown and distributed through its No More Hungry Pets Program, according to the release.

Byers said AmeriCorps VISTA of Central Kentucky currently consists of 10 volunteers who serve at seven non-profit and school sites. Two more volunteers will start next month, she said.
