The Hardin County Democratic Woman’s Club met on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, with President Rebecca Bishop presiding. She led the group in the Pledge, followed by recitation of the Democratic Creed. Ruth Worley gave the devotional. Following a buffet meal, distinguished visitors were recognized and welcomed, with First Vice President Karen McCord introducing the featured speaker, Lt. Col. Harry D. Callicotte, USAR. Callicotte, a practicing attorney, has relocated to Lexington to pursue his vocation. He gave a slide presentation on the history of Veterans Day and recognized veterans in attendance and others who had lost family members in service to the country. He introduced the newest members of Hardin County who recently arrived from Iraq, Kasim Hassan, his wife, Reenas Ali, and their son, Mohammed. Kasim Hassan served as translator with the U.S. Forces in Iraq.
Door prizes donated by Angie Ashlock, Winnie Townsend, Rebecca Bishop, Frances Heinen and Loretta Crady were won by Virginia Nelson, Tom Jaggers, Diane Nall, Susan Dyer and Winnie Townsend.
Angie Ashlock, chairman of the Nominating Committee, gave the committee’s recommendation for 2009 officers: Diane Nall, president; Angie Ashlock, first vice president; Jane Cave, second vice president; Sharon Bush, secretary; Deb Lutz, treasurer; and Terri Bennett, auditor. The report was accepted, and the officers were elected. The installation will be at the Dec. 1 meeting at the Nolin RECC Building. The meeting will begin with a buffet meal at 6:30 p.m. Reservations for the meal/meeting are required by Nov. 28 by calling 737-7098. This will finalize events of 2008 by the club. The 2009 calendar of events will be scheduled during December and January, with the first club meeting of 2009 on Feb. 2. Location and details will be published at a later date.
