Next year’s Christmas break will stay intact for Hardin County Schools’ students whether it snows or not.
The 2013-14 school year calendar was approved Thursday night by the HCS board at its regular meeting. The school year will begin Aug. 7 and end May 23.
The most significant change to the calendar involves the winter break in December and January. The break for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 calendars have included makeup days to use in case of snow closures during the year. The break for the 2013-14 calendar doesn’t include makeup days.
It also falls over two full weeks, instead of beginning and ending in the middle of weeks. It begins on Dec. 23, a Monday, and runs to Jan. 3, a Friday. Bobby Lewis, associate superintendent for student services, said teachers requested using full weeks instead of breaking them up.
Makeup days included in the calendar are Feb. 14 and May 2, and the rest begin after the year is scheduled to end, from May 27 to June 3.
Fall break is scheduled for Oct. 7-11 and spring break is set for March 31 to April 4.
The calendar was unanimously approved.
