Hardin County Schools is proposing redistricting an Elizabethtown neighborhood.

The HCS board will consider redistricting some neighborhoods near the Elizabethtown Post Office and E-town Swim & Fitness in December.

Students in that area attend G.C. Burkhead Elementary School, East Hardin Middle School and Central Hardin High School. With the proposed redistricting, the students would move to Heartland Elementary School, Bluegrass Middle School and John Hardin High School. The change is proposed because of the closer proximity those neighborhoods have to those schools, said Bobby Lewis, associate superintendent for student services.

He also said it would move students to schools with lower enrollments. Lewis estimated the changes would affect an average of 10 to 15 students per grade.

Letters have been sent to affected families. Lewis said he has only heard from two people — one happy to hear of the change and one against it.

The district is hosting a forum from 5 to 6 p.m. Nov. 2 at the HCS Central Office to hear from those families, he said.

If the board approves the change in December, they will go into effect in August.

In the letters, the families have been told if they can provide transportation, students can stay in their current schools. Lewis said those provisions are subject to board approval.
