Downtown design guidelines main item of discussion

The newly appointed Historic Preservation Commission will start forming its framework later this week.

The group is scheduled to meet at 9 a.m. Thursday inside the Elizabethtown City Council chambers at City Hall, said City Planner Kevin Strader.

Strader said proposed design guidelines for downtown are the primary point of discussion during the meeting.

The guidelines are designed to preserve and improve the historic character of downtown, protect cultural and historic resources and encourage the proper reuse of historic buildings without compromising the historical integrity of the structures.

Strader has said the guidelines also evaluate the impact on cultural resources if projects require significant site disturbance and would discourage harmful or incompatible alterations to buildings’ historic character.

Strader said the goal is to keep things simple and in scale with the overall scope of downtown.
