Riders face DUI charges

One horse was killed and another injured Saturday night in a wreck in the 1700 block of St. John Road in Elizabethtown.

Greg Lowe, spokesman for the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office, said Brandon Whittaker, 20, and Dennis Polensky, 28, were riding horses around 8:30 p.m. Saturday on St. John Road.

“It was almost totally dark,” Lowe said.

Because it was dark, an approaching driver, Roger Obenson, failed to see the riders and ended up knocking both men off the horses, he said.

One horse was killed while the other was walked to a nearby barn where a veterinarian was able to treat its injuries, Lowe said.

“That’s a good sign,” he said about the injured horse’s ability to walk.

The riders were taken by ambulance to Hardin Memorial Hospital, Lowe said, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Kentucky State Police have charged Polensky and Whitaker with driving under the influence.

Horseback riding in the dark is dangerous, Lowe said, and particularly on that kind of roadway.
