New store three times larger

Hosparus Thrift Shoppe will triple in size when it moves next month to the former Movie Gallery store, which is three doors down from its current location in Helmwood Plaza.

The thrift shop is upgrading from 3,000 square feet to 9,000 at its new location at 611 W. Poplar St. because of high sales and demand for large items.

At the new site, coordinator Moira Taylor said the thrift shop will be able to accept more donations, including large furniture and appliances, and more easily handle the volume of items coming in.

All proceeds from the donations “go right back to patients and their families,” Taylor said.

The store will close Sept. 14 and reopen in its new location Sept. 23, according to a news release. While closed, Hosparus will continue accepting donations at its new site.

Taylorsaid the nonprofit hospice organization already has renovated the new space by installing fitting rooms, upgrading lighting and applying fresh paint.

“It’s pretty much all new,” she said.

Along with donated items, Taylor said Hosparus is accepting monetary donations to assist with the $25,000 renovations.

Hosparus provides “care, comfort and counseling” to patients facing life-limiting illnesses throughout Kentucky and southern Indiana, according to the release. They care for nearly 6,000 patients each year.
