Christmas has come and gone. The weather turned colder, but no snow for Christmas Day. We spent time with our families. On Dec. 24, Cory and I visited his mom, Cheryl, and later went to mamaw Shortie Holbert’s with all my uncles, aunts and cousins there. On Christmas Day, we went to Cory’s grandparents’ family gathering in Bardstown. Later we went to dad and sissy’s. Mom fried rabbit and country ham and had biscuits and gravy. Yum. Yum. Mom said she makes the best gravy because her daddy taught her how. We exchanged gifts and checked out what was inside our stockings. Mom had stockings for Reese, Roxy and Lucky too.
BENEFIT. There will be a benefit for Kevin and Janice Cundiff Goodman at 4 p.m. Jan 12 at Howevalley School. Kevin fell out of a deer stand 30 feet and has not been able to go to work. Kevin has several fractures throughout his body. We are in need of items, cakes, pies or anything for an auction. There will be soups, sandwiches, chili, hot dogs, chips, drinks and desserts. All donations and help will be appreciated. For details, call 766-7872 or 766-4019.
FAMILY GATHERINGS. Carl and Wanda Edwards hosted a Christmas gathering at their home in Howevalley on Dec. 23. Her mother, Jeanetta Chappell, was surprised with her late daughter Clara’s two sons and families being there. Another surprise was her granddaughter, Emily Chappell, attending. She is in the Army, stationed in New York. Lots and lots of great food was prepared and everyone received a gift. Balloons were released in the air, in memory of Jeanetta’s daughter, Clara, wishing her a Merry Christmas. This was their first Christmas without her. There were 60 in attendance. Everyone had a great time.
Shortie Holbert hosted Christmas for her family at her home Dec. 24. All five of her children and spouses, all the grandchildren except one and all the great-grandchildren except one were there. Gifts were exchanged and delicious food was enjoyed. Thirty-five attended.
CHRISTMAS CARD. Shortie Holbert received a card from Brother Harold Kniffen from Ohio. He is doing well. He celebrates his 82nd birthday Dec. 29.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Happy birthday wishes to Samantha Wilmoth (15 years) on Jan. 1; Josh Thomas and Jarvis Johnson on Jan. 2; Jackie Hicks, Jeana Pugliese, David Morris and Shane Jenkins on Jan. 3; Elaine Sallee on Jan. 4; and Twyla French, Kimberly Snook and Autumn Johnson (14 years) on Jan. 6.

BUNCO. The Howevalley Vertrees Community Club will have bunco at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 14 at the club building. Bring snacks to share. Everyone is welcome. For information, call Freda Griffen, 862-9413.
GET-WELL WISHES. Get-well wishes to Ernest Sadler, Jim Jarboe, Kevin Goodman, John Shope, Opal Smallwood and Cathy Morgan.
Being on Facebook, you sometimes learn about people, meaning word was sent out to friends and schoolmates that Ernest Sadler was rushed to a Louisville hospital in serious condition. His schoolmates and friends are sending prayers his way.
Also, I learned on Facebook that Jim Jarboe has been in the hospital for more than 30 days. His wife, Betty (Sheroan), has been by his side the whole time.
SYMPATHY. Sympathy is extended to the family of Leslie “Pick” Vertrees. He grew up in Vine Grove, being the son of Carroll Vertrees and Zelma Yates Vertrees Nall and step-son of Jim Nall. His surviving siblings are Betty, Frances (sissy), Carolyn, Tina, Frankie and Delmar. He is survived by eight children, 18 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and his girlfriend, Barb.
He was the grandson of Ernest and Birdie Wright Yates of Rineyville and the nephew of my great-grandmother, Ruth Yates Goodman. My mamaw, Shortie Holbert, great-aunt, Joyce McCamish, and cousin, Darrell Butler, from Howevalley attended the funeral in Louisville.
