HOOVER’S WIT. Candy recipes. Bourbon Balls: 1 pound box confectioner’s sugar; 1 stick butter; 2 jiggers of bourbon. Mix butter and sugar until creamy. Add whiskey. Work it really good. Form your pieces in round balls. Melt 6-8 squares of chocolate in double boiler. Sliver a little parafin in it. Dip pieces in chocolate. Let set.
Chocolate Caramels: 1 cup molasses; 1/2 cup sugar; 1/4 pound chocolate; 1/2 cup milk; 2 tablespoons butter. Boil together, stirring constantly. When a rather stiff soft ball is formed in cold water, remover from heat and pour in shallow pan. This recipe was in Hoover’s Wit book submitted by LaVerne Shipley. She lived in Howevalley years ago.
