BOWLING GREEN — Those interested in pursuing a job in human resources at the Human Resource Command, which will be located at Fort Knox after the BRAC transition, also might be interested in entering a human resources certification program at Western Kentucky University.

The WKU office of Continuing Education is offering the Society of Human Resource Management Essentials of Human Resource Management Certification Program from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 26 and 27 at the Carroll Knicely Conference Center in Bowling Green. The deadline to register for the program is Friday.

The program costs $395, which includes materials, a workbook and a certificate of completion. The course is specifically designed for people new to human resources positions or who recently have taken on human resources responsibilities.

Sharon Woodward, Continuing Education program director for the Western Division of Extended Learning and Outreach, said for those interested in a position at the HRC, the course could show potential applicants whether they would enjoy the field of human resources or not.

The course includes topics such as employment law, recruitment and compensation.

“It’s really meant to be a good foundation or a good refresher for folks interested in the field,” Woodward said.

Western has offered the course for a few years before a lack of registrants stopped the program, Woodward said. But after receiving several calls about it, the university decided to hold it again. Many Kentuckians are taking on human resources responsibilities because of downsizing and layoffs, so this course will make them better prepared to handle such responsibilities, she said.
