The mother of a teen found hanging in a Hardin County jail cell in August 2007 is now suing county government and Jailer Louis Lawson for wrongful death of her son.

When Rico Clayton, 19, was found dead in his cell Aug. 26, 2007, jail staffers said the young inmate appeared to have committed suicide.

Earlier this month, Sharon Clayton, mother to the deceased, filed a wrongful death claim against the county, placing blame on the jail and county government for her son’s death.

The county answered, pleading 17 different defenses including sovereign immunity, no reasonable relief available and stating it acted in good faith throughout the entire situation involving Clayton’s incarceration and death.

The claim asks for a monetary settlement.
