What do Fats Waller and Jiminy Cricket have in common?
They both will be represented when Kentucky Vocal Union performs in concert Friday night.
The “Prelude to the Holidays” concert is at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Hardin County Schools Performing Arts Center at John Hardin High School.
Robb Heady, KVU member, said the contemporary barbershop chorus will perform selections from a variety of sources. Among those represented will be Jiminy Cricket from Walt Disney’s “Pinocchio,” jazz musician Waller, and others, such as Nat King Cole, John Michael Montgomery, Simon and Garfunkel, Billy Gillham and Brian Wilson.
“With that said, it will be a most entertaining evening of top quality a cappella singing, as the Kentucky Vocal Union is currently ranked as eighth best chorus in the world by the Barbershop Harmony Society,” Heady said.
More than 300 choruses were ranked in 2010, he said.
Special guests for the concert are the John Hardin Choir, Heartland Fillies and OC Times.
The Heartland Fillies is a local women’s barbershop chorus.
OC Times is the 2008 International Quartet champions and the first international champion quartet to perform in Elizabethtown.
“This young, charismatic quartet from Southern California performs upbeat and entertaining selections from groups such as The Beach Boys, Diamond Rio and many more,” Heady said.
“Prelude to the Holidays” will live up to its name and then some, he said.
“The concert will be a family friendly event, as we’ll also present a few holiday tunes, and will be a rare treat for anyone who enjoys great singing and innovative arrangements,” Heady said.
Tickets for the concert are $15 for adults and $5 for high school age or younger.
