A John Hardin High School English teacher appeared in court this week after being charged with two counts of first-degree arson.

Brant Weiss is suspended with pay until an investigation is complete, Hardin County Schools spokesman John Wright said.

Last Friday, a trash can inside Wicked Eyed Woman on West Dixie Avenue was set on fire. The following day, a planter attached to the building was ignited, according to an arrest citation. People were in the building when both fires occurred.

Elizabethtown Police Department spokesman John Thomas said officers identified Weiss as a suspect during their investigation.

When questioned, Weiss confessed to setting the fires, Thomas said. Police are not sure of a possible motive. According to an arrest citation, alcohol was involved.

Weiss was arrested Monday afternoon and released from the Hardin County Detention Center on a $5,000 unsecured bond.

First-degree arson is a Class A felony. Weiss could face 20 to 50 years or life in prison, if convicted.
