 CECILIA

Irene Dodson, 862-3808

The weather has been very nice over the past weekend, but we are greatly in need of rain as I write this. I have deep compassion for all those folks who lived in the flooded areas. Also those where fires have driven them from their homes and many no longer have homes to go back too. One cannot imagine the trauma of such disaster. TRIPS. On June 14, son James Barnes along with his friend and coworker, Daniel Blan, attended the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Kentucky Speedway. He said there was a record crowd of more than 73,000 people in attendance. They both had an enjoyable night as both are race fans. James also went on a road trip to visit friends and points of interest while on vacation. He went through West Virginia, Virginia and came back home through North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. He visited his good friends, Mike and Birdie Riggs, while in Virginia. They live a few miles from Chesapeake Bay in Port Haywood and while there he went to the Yorktown Battlefield Memorial, Williamsburg and the original Jamestown settlement. On the way back he visited other friends, Melissa Rico and her goddaughter, Destiny, who reside in Bailey, N.C. He said it was a long drive but very enjoyable with beautiful scenery along the way. As I write this, son Wayne Barnes and wife Marcia should soon be arriving home from their vacation trip to Anchorage, Alaska. Marcia has been keeping me posted as to their activities up there. The last e-mail I had from her, they were getting ready to leave soon for the airport. I said technology is wonderful, without it I would have been wondering day by day where they were and what they were doing. I am sure when they get back they will have much more to tell than what she sent. I am so anxious to see the pictures taken on their trip, also the ones James took as well on his trip. ORGANIZATION NEWS. Monday evening we attended the dinner held by the Cecilia Community Ruritan Club in the fellowship hall of the Cecilia Baptist Church. The dinner was in celebration of the charter members, who joined 38 years ago when the club began was first chartered, on July 20, 1971. Faithful members still attending include Floyd Dodson, Kenneth Hayden, Don Morgan, Bob Owsley, Cordell Tabb, Philip Taul and Denver Woodring. Charter members and their wives were served a free catered meal, which was delicious. There were 35-40 present for the occasion. Following the meal some of the charter members expressed how much the club had meant to them and to the community of Cecilia. A short business session followed, with discussion of plans for Cecilia Days coming up Friday evening and all day Saturday, Aug. 8-9. The regular three month meeting of the Hardin Memorial Hospital Auxiliary was held Monday. Some of those attending were Randal and Sue Flowers, Thelma Dunn, Jo Nall, Ruby Parker and Jackie Woosley. They had a nice meeting and refreshments were served CHURCH NEWS. Fourteen ladies from College Heights United Methodist Church attended the United Methodist Women’s meeting last Thursday at the home of Margie and Hobart Nantz. Margie is president of the group. She is such a great hostess and served so many delicious refreshments. Ruby Parker was in charge of the lesson, and Ruth Smith gave the devotional. The July meeting is scheduled to meet at the church at 9:30 AM. This evening at 6 p.m., there will be an Administrative Council meeting in Memory Hall of the church. Everyone is welcome to attend who is interested and members are encouraged to be there. Vacation Bible school dates are quickly approaching, 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 14-18, for ages 3 -11. GET-WELL WISHES. Church prayer concerns include: Cynthia Fullen, Maryetta Lyons, Andrea Hornback, Amaryllis Edwards, Hobart Nantz, Tim Johnson, Lucia Garcia, Maci Jayne Goodwin, Lewis Burba and Adele Andrison, as well as traveling safety for those traveling on vacations and other reasons. SYMPATHY. Sympathy to the families of Jesse Earl Miller of Louisville, who passed away last week. He is survived by two sisters Nora Miller and Clara Boone; also Carolyn Burkhart Nagaiya, survived by family members and the daughter of the late William and Kathryn Burkhart. Both Jesse Earl and I grew up in the same neighborhood, and Carolyn and I both attended Pleasant View Methodist Church while she was a teenager. Condolences to all losing loved ones. BIRTHDAY WISHES. Birthday greetings to Mary Parker, June 30 and to her daughter, Sarah Holzknecht, July 1.   ANNIVERSARY WISHES. Belated 34th wedding anniversary greetings to Donald and Doris Martin, June 21. They celebrated the occasion by attending the Joel Sprawls Lincoln Jamboree. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY. “Ladies, don’t forget the rummage sale. It’s a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands.” No I think I’ll keep mine. HELPFUL HINT. Flexible Vacuum: To get something out of a heat register or under the refrigerator, add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent slightly or flattened to get in narrow openings. SUBMIT YOUR NEWS. I still need your news items. Send to idodson17@kvnet.org no later that Monday morning.
